Sikh soldiers War Cemetery in Benghazi, Libya

I just read about the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Benghazi, still well-maintained it is located just outside the city centre, now opposite a rebel army compound. Around 1,000 graves in all from World War II - mostly British 1st Punjab Regiment, Sikh soldiers of the Indian Army, and row after row of West African troops from the African Pioneer Corps.

This is interesting to see how Sikh Regiment was spread out all over the world fighting alongside British in World War II.

Below is an extract from BBC News article;

Speaking of which, I spent an hour in Benghazi at the well-maintained Commonwealth War Cemetery just outside the city centre, now opposite a rebel army compound.

There are perhaps 1,000 graves in all from World War II - mostly British, but including members of the Sudan Defence Corps, sepoys from the 1st Punjab Regiment, Sikh soldiers of the Indian Army, and row after row of West African troops from the African Pioneer Corps.

Amnesty International UK - WANTED: EXECUTIONER

India is advertising for an executioner for the first executions for those on death row in 7 years - Amnesty International UK describe this as a huge "step back for human rights".

Perhaps what is most disturbing is that both people who are due to be killed, have huge support for their innocence and their is massive doubt over the Indian Government's reasons and evidence ..

COMPETITIVE SALARY, MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE START, EXPERIENCE NECESSARY http://blogs.amnesty.org.uk/blogs_entry.asp?eid=7755

It’s rare that the executioner is the one on the wanted list, but in India this week there is a hunt on. The perversity of advertising such a post, really struck me. Exactly what sort of essential skills and experience would be requisite? You can get a disturbing insight into the mindset of a professional killer, by reading this interview with a Saudi state executioner who claims to “love his job” here.

This search for an executioner comes shortly after the announcement that India is to carry out the country’s first execution since 2004. The state of Assam, where one of the two men who has had his petition for mercy rejected lives, no longer employs an executioner, so rare is the need.

On Friday, President Pratibha Patil accepted the Home Ministry's recommendations to reject the mercy petitions of death row prisoners Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar and Mahendra Nath Das, paving the way for the death sentences to go ahead. This would mark the end of an encouraging seven-year death-penalty-free period, and would be a serious step backwards for human rights in the country. However, it is not a done deal yet. Media reports today have focussed on the urgent scramble to engage an executioner. Thus far, without success.

India voted against the resolution for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, 2008 and 2010, but President Patil has commuted the death sentences of 20 prisoners since November 2009.

India would be bucking the global trend towards ending executions, numbers of which continue to decline globally, if they were to go ahead. Perhaps this delay might give sufficient pause for reflection to President Patil, and she might reconsider. I can think of few jobs which more warrant the axe than that of executioner- along with jouster and lamplighter- it belongs in the history books. You can read about other obsolete jobs here.

C.F. Andrews - Witness to Sikh History

Please see my active blog for blog updates: http://www.rskhalsa.blogspot.com

> C.F. Andrews - Witness to Sikh History...
> Posted: 12 Feb 2010 10:26 AM PST

> Reverend Charles Freer Andrew was a young Christian Anglican Priest from England during the British Raaj who was dear friend of the Sikhs. He had come to India as a priest, and later became a teacher, writer, journalist, translator, columnist, newspaper-correspondent, editor, educationist, labor leader, mediator, activist, spokesman, and leader.

> Reverend Andrews became the conscience of the British Raaj, questioning every tactic and strategy and demanding that all parties walk the straight line and do the right thing. He soon made enemies that wanted to stop his work. The British authorities found him to be a thorn in their side - an Englishman constantly questioning their motives and their methods. Some saw him as betraying his land of birth, even the very Faith he had been sent to preach. It didn't help when he offered to resign from his Church and priesthood. On the other hand, many Indians worried if he was a British spy.

> Andrews began by attacking the very methods of Christian proselytization in India - and don't forget that he was a priest sent to India to help convert the masses! He questioned the Western and Eurocentric view of Christianity, and demanded that it embrace humanity, not just what he himself referred to as the "white races". It didn't take long before he went further and introduced the revolutionary idea that all Indians were to be treated as equals with the rest of the citizens of the Empire! He argued they were British subjects. He began to publicly sell the idea that the only way Indians would ever achieve equality would be through complete independence from Britain.

> Whilst Indians became politically active to gain independence, Reverend Andrews kept the British authorities on their toes by fighting for the rights of Indians in the colonies - in South Africa, Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana, even Canada. And in India, for the rights of women, the so-called backward castes, and so on.

> Reverend Andrew was stopped from entering the Panjab, however some how he gained accessed to the Panjab. The things he witnessed in Panjab were written and published to ensure that the world, in particular people living in Britain, knew what was happening.

> In September 1922 there was a peaceful protest against the Mahant Sunder Daas who disrespected Guru Ka Bagh Gurdwara. He was given full support by the police who severely beat Sikhs with bamboo sticks. In all, 5606 Sikhs are arrested, 1500 seriously injured and dozens killed during a period of 3 months. Andrews witnessed the brutality and inhumanity and stated that he “saw hundreds of Christs suffering the cross daily”. Eventually the British government conceded and handed back control of the Gurdwara to the Sikhs.

> Below is the eye-wtiness account of Rev. CF Andrews of the Guru-Ka-Bagh Morcha (protest):

> It was a sight which I never wish to see again, a sight incredible to an Englishman. There were four Akali Sikhs with black turbans facing a band of about two dozen policemen, including two English officers. They had walked slowly up to the line of police just before I had arrived and they were standing silently in front of them at about a yard’s distance. They were perfectly still and did not move further forward. Their hands were placed together in prayer and it was clear that they were praying. Then, without the slightest provocation on their part, an Englishman lunged forward the head of his lathi [staff] which was bound with brass. He lunged it forward in such a way that his fist which held the staff struck the Akali Sikhs, who were praying, just at the collar bone with great force.

> It looked the most cowardly blow as I saw it struck and I had the greatest difficulty in keeping myself under control... The blow which I saw was sufficient to throw the Akali Sikh and send him to the ground. He rolled over and slowly got up and at once faced the same punishment again. Time after time, one of the four who had gone forward was laid prostrate by repeated blows, now from English officers and now from the police who were under their control.... The brutality and inhumanity of the whole scene was indescribably increased by the fact that the men who were praying to God had already taken a vow that they would remain silent and peaceful in word and deed. The Akali Sikhs who had taken this vow, both at the Golden Temple and before starting and also at the shrine of Guru-ka-Bagh were...largely from the army. They had served in many campaigns in Flanders, in France, in Mesopotamia and in East Africa. Some of them at the risk of their own safety must have saved the lives of Englishmen who had been wounded. Now they were falling to the ground at the hands of the English officials serving in the same government which they themselves had served. ...I saw no act, or look of defiance. It was a true martyrdom, a true act of faith...

> There has been something far greater in this event than a mere dispute about land and property. It has gone far beyond the technical questions of legal possession or distraint. A new heroism, learnt through suffering, has arisen in the land. A new lesson in moral warfare has been taught to the world.... It reminded me of the shadow of the Cross.

> ....It was very rarely that I witnessed any Akali Singh, who went forward to suffer, flinch from a blow when it was struck. Apart from the instinctive and slight shrinking back, there was nothing, so far as I can remember, that could be called a deliberate avoidance of the blows struck. The blows were received one by one without resistance and without a sign of fear.

> ... A new heroism, learnt through suffering, has arisen in the land. A new lesson in moral warfare has been taught to the world... It was very rarely that I witnessed any Akali Sikh, who went forward to suffer, flinch from a blow when it was struck. Apart from the instinctive and involuntary reaction of the muscles that has the appearance of a slight shrinking back, there was nothing, so far as I can remember that could be called a deliberate avoidance of the blow struck. The blows were received one by one without resistance and without a sign of fear."

Porsche to sue over congestion charge

Porsche are going to take on Mayor of London over Congestion Charging. Seems like an interesting development although he's been to court before and won so will this be any different?

Porsche have also set up a site to gain public support on http://www.porschejudicialreview.co.uk

The image “http://www.businesscar.co.uk/Pictures/Title/l/x/d/C_charge_consultation.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Porsche could sue over £25 a day congestion charge

Porsche is threatening a legal challenge to London mayor Ken Livingstone's plans to demand a £25 congestion charge from drivers of high powered sports cars and 4x4s entering the capital.

The German luxury car company's British division today cited an "unjust" increase as it announced plans to make an application for judicial review on Livingstone's plans to hike the congestion charge for some cars to £25 from £8 now. The rise for those living inside the zone is to £25 from 80p a day.

Porsche labelled the proposed increase for certain cars "disproportionate" and argued the rise will do nothing to achieve the stated aim of decreasing emissions in central London.

"A massive congestion charge increase is quite simply unjust. Thousands of car owners driving a huge range of cars will be hit by a disproportionate tax which is clear will have a very limited effect on CO2 emissions," said Andy Goss, managing director of Porsche Cars GB.

"Not only is this rise completely unfair to many drivers, but it will also damage London-based businesses of all sizes, and successful people from across the world will start to think twice about basing themselves here if they think they are going to be used as cash cows for City Hall," he added.

Porsche said it will be writing to Livingstone this week. The mayor will then have 14 days to respond to the carmaker.

"If the mayor fails to respond to Porsche's letter or refuses to reconsider his plans, Porsche intends formally to submit its application for judicial review at the Royal Courts of Justice," the company said in a statement.

The mayor's office responded saying the threatened legal action was "a double attack on Londoners".

"First Porsche are trying to deprive Londoners of their democratic right to decide in the mayoral election on 1 May whether they want gas guzzling and polluting cars to drive in London when there is absolutely no need for them to do so. Second they are trying to impose on all Londoners unnecessary levels of pollution and greenhouse gases by a tiny minority," said a spokesman for the mayor.

"No one is allowed to throw their rubbish in the street and Porsche should not be allowed to impose gas guzzling polluting cars on Londoners who do not want them."

Scottish Sikh Attacked

Sikh man racially abused on bus An investigation has been launched after a Sikh man was racially abused by a gang on a bus in Edinburgh. The incident took place on a number 26 LRT bus travelling to Corstorphine, at about 2230 GMT on Saturday.

The 22-year-old victim, who wears a turban, boarded the bus at Haymarket with a friend.

Shortly after, a group of youths, who are all in their teens, racially abused the victim, partly due to his traditional clothing.

They then got off the bus at various stops along Corstorphine Road and Drum Brae South.

The main abuser, who is female, got off the bus at the top of the hill of Drum Brae Drive near to the Fox Covert housing estate.

She is white, 16 to 20 years old, 5ft 8ins, of slim build, with blonde hair tied up in a ponytail. She was wearing a white jacket and grey jeans.

A police spokesman said: "The victim was left extremely upset as a result of this incident, which shows a lack of respect for the victim's faith.

"There is no place in society for religious or racial intolerance.

"We want anyone who witnessed the incident, or who knows the identity of any of the youths involved, to get in touch."

Reading Camp

Last weekend a Gurmat Camp was held at Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Reading, Berkshire. It was a weekend camp that started 9.45am on Saturday 15th December. Bhaji Sukhjeet Singh from Reading Gurdwara Sahib organised the camp and put a lot of effort into getting everything arranged. It was the first ever camp in Reading and we didn't know how much Sangat was going to come. The sevadaars that led the classes included Bhai Ravjeet Singh, his younger brother Jagdeep Singh, Bhaji Harbir Singh, Bhaji Gurpreet Singh, Bhenji Pardeep Kaur and Bhaji Vijay Singh. Bhaji Arwinder Singh and Bhaji Sukhjit Singh did a lot of running around and getting things organised. It was great how Guru Sahib got all the sevadaars and the Sangat together! Waheguru.

If you've been to Reading Gurdwara, you will know that the PARKING is a nightmare! Waheguru! The Gurdwara road has cars on both side and you just about squeeze through, so you can imagine finding a car park space can be stressful (especially with my parking skills! Waheguru!). But with Guru Sahib's Kirpaa, when there are any special programmes at the Gurdwara Sahib, then Gurdwara Sahib hires out the nearby church car park or Thames Valley University car park. During camp the Sangat could park their cars at the university. I'll post more about the camp with the photos in the next part.

The campers where aged 5 years + and split up into three groups, 5-9 years, 10-15 years, 16 years plus. The campers went through various workshops and seminars which included discussions on issues different generations are feeling. Campers got chance to air problems they face at school, work and home and find solutions or places they could seek help from. After 1 hour to 90 minutes depending there was a little break as well as tasty langar throughout the day! Day one of camp was concluded with rehraas and Keertan carrying on late into the night.

Day two started earlier with campers arriving early even though many had stayed late into the night day before. Following Hukamnamma and English explinations campers sat through an interactive talk on Gursikh jeevan followed by questions and answers. The next workshop was dastar tieing. While many people boys, girls, men and women had chance to tie dastar (turban) they also had chance to have informal chat with gursikhs regarding any problems or questions they may have.

The finally of the camp was inform of Kirtan and Katha by Bhai Manvir Singh, Dass Ravjeet Singh and Bhai Vijay Singh for over 1 hour and a half. After this Anand Sahib, Ardaas and Hukamnamma was taken then discussed in English. With Guru Sahib’s grace the camp was a great success.

How Was Guru Nanak Dev Ji Different?

This is something interesting to think about.

First of all Baba Nanak obtained the gate of the grace (of Lord) and then He underwent and earned the rigorous discipline( of heart and mind).

Usually we would think of going through Gwlxw first, but Guru Nanak Dev Ji's case was different. In his case:

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to this Earth, he had already acquired the naam khajanaa fully. No wonder the Bhatts stated:
